"he opened my eyes to the world of fashion .. And in his eyes was one with no boundaries" Shaun Leane 2014
My friend Charlotte and I travelled to London to visit one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year at the V&A. We were all handed a mini programme which featured the collaboration between McQueen and Swarovski. There are 200 items in the exhibit, much larger then the new york version thanks to collectors Katy England and Annabelle Neilson, and also the Isabelle Blur collections. It was like walking into a completely unique world from the mind of Alexander McQueen. The First room featured Collections from the highland rape which featured the infamous "bumster" trousers , autumn/winter 1995 , garments to the tailored jackets which were stitched/embroidered with gold thread.
The cabinet of curiosities, an inspiring room in which i felt very overwhelmed. This room was huge with all 4walls covered with McQueens dresses, headpieces, accessories and with screens all over the walls playing back the theatrical catwalk shows. The main garment on display, which took centre stage, was the dress I was hoping to find,
The spray painted dress !
A Cotton, synthetic tulle and leather belt dress, no 13 spring/summer 1999 (look79). This was one of the first pieces I discovered as a fashion student a few years ago, ever since I have watched all the McQueen catwalk shows i could find on youtube!
All of his shows were stunning, theatrical, sinister and poetic. He truly was a fashion visionary who broke the rules!
We were also treated to the The famous Kate moss hologram which was incredible! Ivory organza and tulle , from the collection windows of culloden, autumn/ winter 2006. It felt very lifelike.
" there is no way back for me now. I'm going to take you on a journey you've never dreamed possible" .Alexander McQueen.
I hope you have enjoyed the read
